Emérgéntly builds on TetraMap concepts and extends them into new areas of application.
TetraMap: illustrates the diversity and interdependencies of human behaviour.
Emérgéntly: illustrates the diversity and interdependencies of the systems we behave in.
Emérgéntly simply shuffles TetraMap triangles to show a sequence of Elements in an anticlockwise spiral.
Both TetraMap and Emérgéntly represent an unfolded tetrahedron.
Both map the behaviour of a whole system.
Each is a metaphor, each with its own limitations. Neither are "scientifically proven" but have strong "face validity".
TetraMap is an excellent bridge from polarised thinking (left/right, up/down, in/out) to whole systems thinking where everything is interdependent. Hence it is best to precede Emérgéntly, easing the transition to whole systems thinking.
Emérgéntly avoids polarised thinking and instead, repeatedly spirals through interdependent Elements.
Both TetraMap and Emérgéntly recognise the fundamental principles of Diversity, Interdependence and Synergy. Emérgéntly adds Precession (side effects), stretching our responsibility beyond what we do ourselves, to include all consequences, both intended and unintended. In the TetraBottom Line of People, Planet, Profit, Legacy, responsibility for Legacy represents future side effects.
TetraMap illustrates Synergy with the 1 + 1 = 4 exercise, where one triangle plus one triangle can equal 4 triangles of the same size as the originals. Who wouldn't want that kind of productivity? The tetrahedron demonstrates it is possible.
Emérgéntly illustrates Synergy with 1 triangle plus a different triangle = 4 triangles, demonstrating that Diversity and Interdependence are prerequisites for Synergy. Only when one triangle forms a left-handed spiral, and the other a right-handed spiral, can they fit together to create a tetrahedron.
The TetraMap and Emérgéntly planning processes are designed for very different situations. Emérgéntly is best when the desired outcome is very uncertain. Once desired outcomes become clear, TetraMap's Why are we doing this? is most useful and can be repeated for different outcomes.

Generate courage and trust in individual behavioural transformation to seed emergent, regenerative leaders, systems and futures.
After running the Emérgéntly Process, the first action implemented was the Action 4.5: define new offerings mind map* of how Emérgéntly builds on TetraMap concepts and extends them into new areas of application.
The following sections summarise work in progress:
TetraMap: illustrates the diversity and interdependencies of human behaviour
A spiral IN from the team to the diversity and interdependencies of the team members.
Emérgéntly: illustrates the diversity and interdependencies of the systems we behave in.
A spiral OUT from the team (or system) to the diversity and interdependencies of the bigger context the team/system is nested within.
Emérgéntly simply shuffles TetraMap triangles to consistently illustrate any sequence of Elements in an anticlockwise spiral—like the example here where the Functions Spiral emerges from TetraMap.

Post Covid, our values have evolved for deeper meaning and commitment. A sense of urgency to live these values now cannot be understated.

Yoshimi and Jon used the Emérgéntly Process to explore the potential synergy generated by integrating TetraMap and Emérgéntly. This took about 5 hours spread over 2 days.
Looking back at the process they noticed that completing the Feedback Phase helped to establish the sequence of actions that needed to happen. They also found they had a much clearer understanding of Purpose, which they reworded as the final step in the Process. The purpose of integration is to: Generate courage and trust in individual behavioural transformation to seed emergent, regenerative leaders, systems and futures.

For previous overseas trips, Yoshimi & Jon donated directly to Million Metres Streams which was sustainable, but not regenerative. Thanks to the Emérgéntly process, they developed a more regenerative strategy designed to develop a more eco ego in youth. Initially 5 youths were invited to choose Nature based charities to each donate $1000 to. Then something happened that is typical of regenerative strategies. Full presentations are available by clicking the example slides next to the descriptions.

Charles, soon to turn 12, was the first to give a presentation, impressively without any help from his parents.
The Nature Conservancy’s purpose is to help preserve wildlife, forests, and large bodies of water.
By 2030, I will be 18 years old. By this time, I would have almost completed my first year at college, and have become mostly (I hope) independent. I think that we will be able to avoid the worst of global warming, people will take care to preserve the environment, and forests will be re-planted. I also hope that people will begin to understand the effects of poaching, and will eventually stop.
Some new habits that I hope to have by the end of the month are composting, conserve, and bike. Overall, I think that this project has been essential to deepening my understanding of the seriousness of environmental issues.
Ted visited the Rappahannock Estuary of the Chesapeake Bay where he learned about restoring the oyster beds as one step in the regeneration of the thriving ecosystem that used to exist.
James presented about his #Team Seas organisation, but also engaged us all to join a local beach cleanup. Team Seas is:
Why is this important?
Emi chose HEET for GEOTHERMAL HEATING as an environmentally friendly solution to heating and cooling homes.
We can tap into this level temperature at the the bottom, where if it is cold outside we can create these pipes of water to get the heat from the ground and bring it up into the house and vice versa. Very renewable, very efficient, and it can happen 24/7, both heating/cooling. And reciprocity is here where everyone can collaborate for the community.
HEET focus on enabling a clean energy transition, and they also focus on equality which I think is really important. And they also have research teams developing new technology. One thing that I learned is that Romans actually used geothermal energy for their bath houses.
Julie chose a German organisation, GeschenkBaum: WaldSchützer (Gift Tree: Forest Protector).
Did you know that the Amazon rainforest has a very important role for our planet? The Amazon rainforest comprises more than half of the world's remaining tropical rainforest and has the greatest biodiversity of all tropical forests (based on the vascular plants as an indicator).
Looking towards the year 2030, already I think about rainy days differently. Now I think it's good if there's enough rain. Without severe storms, without massive floods and dramatic droughts. I want to live in a world where nature is in balance. I hope that this will go better with all events in the future. That everyone participates. I hope that by then our planet will have recovered a bit instead of being more exhausted and that there will be peace in the world.
Imagine yourself an astronaut on Spaceship Earth watching the moon go past AND eclipsing the sun!
We are happy and comfy because Mother Nature provides us with everything we need to live–the 4 Elements: Earth-Air-Water-Fire. Now, imagine jumping ahead in time to 2030! How old are you? How do YOU look? How's Mother Nature doing? Here’s a chance to do something NOW that’ll help make 2030 bright & beautiful for all of us!
Because we, Uncle Jon and Auntie Yosh, are flying allllll the way from Aotearoa NZ to see you, it’s important we consider the massive cost of CO2 emissions going to being emitted. Not only are we burning fossil fuels, but consider the CO2 cost of the EMBODIED ENERGY used to build everything needed for the trip e.g. planes and airports. So! The purpose of this project is to share important lessons about Nature, and about how we, together, can keep her and us healthy enough to enjoy our future.
Values are what we believe to be important. We want these values to be reflected in how we behave.
Throughout this project, you'll discover and clarify your values ...how you choose to be and what to do.
You will receive USD$1000 to donate to a cause, organisation, school or community project that serves, supports and restores NATURE. Consider this YOUR HANDPRINT – your contribution to a project that you trust to use the money to restore and revitalise Mother Nature.

U. Jon and A. Yosh look forward to learning about your project – in person! - in April/May this year.
Your “presentation” can be whatever you like! How you incorporate the points below into your presentation can be as creative, weird, fascinating, beautiful as you wish. (Music – Art - Theatre – Journal – Report – PowerPoint – Video –whatever!) There is no deadline…the presentation may be a milestone – the donation will be made in your name when you’re ready.
Here are some points we’d like you to cover:
Information, links and other stuff that'll get you and your parents thinking! ASK them, each other, Aunties, Uncles - whoever might help you make sense of whatever.
There's a TON of scientific evidence that demonstrate that we have solutions to mitigate the damage of climate change and restore Nature. Part of that ton of evidence includes “Project Drawdown”, a very comprehensive treasure chest of climate solutions.
Project Drawdown
Founded in 2014, Project Drawdown® is a nonprofit organization that seeks to help the world reach “drawdown”.
The Project’s Vision: to stop global warming with solutions that exist today.
The Purpose: to help the world reach “drawdown”... the point in the future when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline, thereby halting catastrophic climate change—as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible.
Climate actions from Project Drawdown (Here’s a summary of just a few solutions and how many gigatons of CO2 equivalent would be reduced or sequestered by 2050 if the solutions worked)
Information fromhttps://drawdown.org/solutions. Photos by Yoshimi & Jon.
Reduce Food Waste Roughly one-third of the world’s food is never eaten. By reducing loss and waste, we can reduce the need for land and resources used to produce food as well as the greenhouse gases released in the process. |
|
Seafloor Protection https://drawdown.org/solutions/seafloor-protection Vast amounts of carbon stored in seafloor sediments risk release by bottom-trawling fishing. Bottom-trawling bans and establishment of Marine Protected Areas can protect this important carbon sink. |
|
Forest Protection In their biomass and soil, forests are powerful carbon storehouses. Protection prevents emissions from deforestation, shields stored carbon, and enables ongoing carbon sequestration. |

Here are a few videos from our Tanglewood Project on Handprints, Reducing Waste, Climate Action We had several Open Homes before we moved in to share how we worked to create huge HANDPRINTS from our energy systems...including solar panels and changing habits to reduce energy waste. Tanglewood runs on the sun's energy and we are ZERO carbon emissions! (Induction stove; EV; E-BBQ; E-candles; E-bikes; E-mower, etc.)
See Uncle Jon's attempt at asking people to reciprocate Nature with HUGE handprints! https://zenet100.com/
